I don't know you. I don't know your history. I don't know what kind of parents you had, how your teachers treated you in school, how many times you've had your heartbroken and how many mistakes you've made along the way. I have zero ideas of how you became the unique individual you are today. All I know is that you've experienced pain. You've experienced loss. You've had dreams and ambitions. I know that you've likely felt misunderstood, underestimated, and down for the count at one point or another in your life time. Even though I know all of these things, I still don't know you. I don't know your circumstances and in order to understand you better, I'm ready to listen. There's the flip side of the coin.

Eight months ago, just before the effective date of my resignation from my former employer, I was injured in the line of duty. The injury seemed relatively minor, nothing more than a tweaked wrist on my dominate side. The worker’s comp doctor assured me it was just a deep bone bruise and nothing to worry about. I went through with my resignation and moved 1800 miles across the country in a leap of faith to join my now-wife in her home state.

It is true that officers have to reconcile that evil exists; it's a reality that an officer will see violence. It's a reality that officers are targets because many people do not want to be detained for their actions and some simply despise the badge. However, officers do not sign up in order to die. They sign up to fight and keep evil in check so that all of us, including themselves, can live.

So here lately I've been privy to, and part of, many conversations regarding the current state of affairs in law enforcement. My immediate co-workers and even my supervisor hold forth with astonishing regularity on how much longer we each have until retirement (my boss can punch out any day, but needs the money). We all daydream out loud about the different career choices we could have, should have, would have made if only we'd have known how things would turn out. This conversation will happen again, probably contemporaneously with yet another sensationalized article involving a police officer, a shooting and an “unarmed black man”.
