You Don't Know Me

I don't know you. I don't know your history. I don't know what kind of parents you had, how your teachers treated you in school, how many times you've had your heartbroken and how many mistakes you've made along the way. I have zero ideas of how you became the unique individual you are today. All I know is that you've experienced pain. You've experienced loss. You've had dreams and ambitions. I know that you've likely felt misunderstood, underestimated, and down for the count at one point or another in your life time. Even though I know all of these things, I still don't know you. I don't know your circumstances and in order to understand you better, I'm ready to listen. There's the flip side of the coin.

Who Will Really Care About Black Lives in 2016?

So "LT's" post about the “Black Lives Matter” bunch (on our Facebook page) got me to thinking about the state of affairs in our society today. No longer content to merely target police officers with a broad brush, the BLM “movement” has morphed into something larger. It's gotten to the point now where celebrity figures like Stephen Colbert are inviting the “leaders” of BLM onto the mainstream platform of their shows to apologize for the mythical, ill-defined collective sin of “white privelege”. A movement has been gaining steam as of late in which black celebrities are boycotting the Oscars because they are “so white”. As an aside, they're late to the party, I've been boycotting the Oscars for the entirety of the nearly 40 years I've existed.

But What Can I Do?

So here lately I've been privy to, and part of, many conversations regarding the current state of affairs in law enforcement. My immediate co-workers and even my supervisor hold forth with astonishing regularity on how much longer we each have until retirement (my boss can punch out any day, but needs the money). We all daydream out loud about the different career choices we could have, should have, would have made if only we'd have known how things would turn out. This conversation will happen again, probably contemporaneously with yet another sensationalized article involving a police officer, a shooting and an “unarmed black man”.

Black Lives DO Matter

Black Lives Matter. That's it. I have no caveats, no 'but...', no exceptions. Every black life matters. Now, I've been hearing this for a year, usually in hashtags, or screamed at me by protestors. Usually, that's all the protestors say. That's what they want, they want black lives to matter. Well? They can stop protesting now, because they got what they want. They want black lives to matter, and they do.

Bring Back Personal Responsibility

Unless your head is buried in the proverbial internet sand, you've no doubt encountered this brief video that's been all over the "news" today...Yet, as with so many (if not most) stories about cops out there: there's more to the story.

The Real Drama Unfolding

This morning, while drinking my coffee and catching up on the news, there was a blurb I caught about the NYPD now sending recruits to a one act play "Anne & Emmett" by Janet Langhart Cohen (who is the wife of former Secretary of Defense William Cohen). The play is an imaginary conversation that takes place between Anne Frank, who died in a Nazi concentration camp, and Emmett Till, who was killed in Mississippi in 1955.

The Kind of Racism Killing America

Tonight, as I type these words, I’m keeping an eye on the fresh batch of rioting, looting and other lawlessness going on in Ferguson, MO on the one year anniversary of the attack on Officer Darren Wilson.  In doing so, this picture came across one of my newsfeeds: My eyes were drawn to the sign that states “Racism is Destroying AmeriKKKa” juxtaposed next to shirts bearing the image of assailant Mike Brown and the words “Chosen 4 Change”.  As I stared at this picture trying to make sense of its inherent contradictions, my mind was stirred to remember some words (ironically)
