So here lately I've been privy to, and part of, many conversations regarding the current state of affairs in law enforcement. My immediate co-workers and even my supervisor hold forth with astonishing regularity on how much longer we each have until retirement (my boss can punch out any day, but needs the money). We all daydream out loud about the different career choices we could have, should have, would have made if only we'd have known how things would turn out. This conversation will happen again, probably contemporaneously with yet another sensationalized article involving a police officer, a shooting and an “unarmed black man”.

The phrase "Monday Morning Quarterback" carries with it a negative connotation and it's usually for good reason. You see, when we watch our favorite athlete from the comfort of our sofas, never having played the game at that level, it's quite easy to critique how a play was executed or how a split second decision was made that we didn't like.  And no one wants to be critiqued by people who lack the experience, pressure or perspective that one can only have by being "in the game."

This morning, while drinking my coffee and catching up on the news, there was a blurb I caught about the NYPD now sending recruits to a one act play "Anne & Emmett" by Janet Langhart Cohen (who is the wife of former Secretary of Defense William Cohen). The play is an imaginary conversation that takes place between Anne Frank, who died in a Nazi concentration camp, and Emmett Till, who was killed in Mississippi in 1955.

By now we’ve probably all seen the news story of the Alabama detective who was beaten with his own service weapon by a suspect who disregarded the detective’s verbal commands to stay in his vehicle during a traffic stop. That suspect, who also happened to be “unarmed” (at least initially), gained control of the detective’s gun and savagely assaulted him. Fortunately the offender ended the attack once the detective was left bloody and unconscious.
