So "LT's" post about the “Black Lives Matter” bunch (on our Facebook page) got me to thinking about the state of affairs in our society today. No longer content to merely target police officers with a broad brush, the BLM “movement” has morphed into something larger. It's gotten to the point now where celebrity figures like Stephen Colbert are inviting the “leaders” of BLM onto the mainstream platform of their shows to apologize for the mythical, ill-defined collective sin of “white privelege”. A movement has been gaining steam as of late in which black celebrities are boycotting the Oscars because they are “so white”. As an aside, they're late to the party, I've been boycotting the Oscars for the entirety of the nearly 40 years I've existed.

It is true that officers have to reconcile that evil exists; it's a reality that an officer will see violence. It's a reality that officers are targets because many people do not want to be detained for their actions and some simply despise the badge. However, officers do not sign up in order to die. They sign up to fight and keep evil in check so that all of us, including themselves, can live.

So here lately I've been privy to, and part of, many conversations regarding the current state of affairs in law enforcement. My immediate co-workers and even my supervisor hold forth with astonishing regularity on how much longer we each have until retirement (my boss can punch out any day, but needs the money). We all daydream out loud about the different career choices we could have, should have, would have made if only we'd have known how things would turn out. This conversation will happen again, probably contemporaneously with yet another sensationalized article involving a police officer, a shooting and an “unarmed black man”.

Black Lives Matter.

That's it. I have no caveats, no 'but...', no exceptions. Every black life matters.

Now, I've been hearing this for a year, usually in hashtags, or screamed at me by protestors. Usually, that's all the protestors say. That's what they want, they want black lives to matter. Well? They can stop protesting now, because they got what they want. They want black lives to matter, and they do.

So the Washington Post published a couple of articles in the last week, one entitled “The Cops Who Keep Killing” (as opposed to the more realistic but slightly less inflammatory title of “The Cops Who Have Been in Multiple Justified Shootings”). The other article was given the headline “A year of reckoning: Police fatally shoot nearly 1,000”. The gist of the first article is that the Post found 55 officers across the entire United States of America that were involved in shootings in 2015 that had (gasp!) been involved in prior deadly force incidents in their careers. They go on to cite the media's favorite anti-cop policing “expert”, one Dr. Geoffrey Alpert of the University of South Carolina, whose sterling academic credentials provide him a soapbox for weighing-in against cops in news stories about police pursuits and use of force.
